The New Aces Go Places 新最佳拍檔 (1989): The Movie Where Leslie Cheung and Nina Li Became the "New" Duo — But Everyone Still Wanted the Old One
First, take a look at the movie trailer from back then.
The Final Adventure
新最佳拍檔 (The New Aces Go Places) was released in 1989. It was the fifth and final film in the series.
The film introduced a new pair of thieves: a brother-and-sister duo played by Leslie Cheung and Nina Li. They become the "new best partners" — and they steal the spotlight from King Kong and Baldy.
The plot involves stolen Chinese artifacts, a lost sword, and a mission to recover them. The film was directed by Lau Kar-leung, a legendary martial arts choreographer, so the action is more prominent than in the earlier films.
The New Aces Go Places is the least beloved film in the series. The comedy is less sharp, the chemistry between the new duo is less electric, and the film feels like a cash-in rather than a creative continuation.
But it's still worth watching for Leslie Cheung's performance. He's charming, funny, and effortlessly charismatic.
The Legacy of the Series
The Aces Go Places series defined Hong Kong comedy for a generation. It introduced the "007-style" action comedy to Hong Kong audiences, combined with local humor and slapstick.
It also made Samuel Hui and Karl Maka household names. Karl Maka's bald head and thick glasses became an iconic image, and Samuel Hui's music became inseparable from the franchise.
The series ended in 1989. But its influence can still be felt in Hong Kong cinema today.
