Fight Back to School 3: Dragon Over the Chicken Year 逃學威龍3之龍過雞年 (1993): The Movie Where Stephen Chow Went to a Wedding, Met 梅艷芳, and Forgot About School Altogether — But Still Made Us Laugh

The Third Film That Isn't Really a School Film

Here's the thing about the third Fight Back to School film: it's not really a school film.

Chow Sing-sing is no longer a student. He's no longer a teacher. He's a wealthy businessman. His wife (Anita Mui) is beautiful. His life is perfect. Then the real Chow Sing-sing is murdered — and our hero is sent undercover as his doppelganger to investigate the crime.

The title is misleading. There is almost no school in this film. There is a lot of comedy, a lot of mystery, and a lot of 梅艷芳.

Released in 1993, Fight Back to School 3 was a box office hit, earning HK$25 million. But it's the least beloved film in the trilogy — a fact that Wong Jing acknowledged when he said: "The third film was a disaster."

What Is It About?

Chow Sing-sing's wealthy doppelganger is murdered on the night of his wedding anniversary. Our hero is sent in to pretend to be him and investigate the crime. His wife, Chu (Anita Mui), is initially suspicious — but soon realizes that this "husband" is much more attentive than the original.

Meanwhile, the real killer is still at large. The case is tied to a powerful business rival (Roy Cheung). And the film's final act is a shootout that feels more like a Police Story film than a Fight Back to School one.

But the film's true heart is the relationship between Chow and Mui's character. She plays a woman who has been neglected by her husband for years. When she meets the "new" version of him — kind, caring, and attentive — she begins to fall for him.

It's a surprisingly tender performance from Mui, and it grounds the film in a way that the previous sequels lacked.

The Scene You'll Never Forget

There's a scene where Chow and Mui's character sit in a bathtub together. She tells him she knows he's not her husband. He doesn't deny it. She doesn't care.

It's a quiet moment. A tender moment. A moment that reminds you that Stephen Chow can be more than just a comedian.

And then the film cuts to a pratfall.

The Legacy

Fight Back to School 3 is the black sheep of the trilogy. It's not as funny as the first film. It's not as coherent as the second. But it's still worth watching for the chemistry between Stephen Chow and Anita Mui.

The film also marks a turning point for Stephen Chow. He's no longer just the "King of Comedy." He's becoming a serious actor.

Final Thought

Fight Back to School 3 is the sequel that dared to be different. It's not a classic, but it's a reminder of Stephen Chow's range.
