The film was a box office disappointment in 1995, earning just HK$21 million. But like its predecessor, it found its audience over time. Today, it holds a 9.2 on Douban, with over 1.8 million ratings.
What Is It About?
The plot picks up where Pandora's Box left off.
Joker (Stephen Chow) has become the Monkey King. Lin Zixia (Karen Mok), the demon who loves him, is devastated. She can't accept that he has become a hero — it means he can no longer love her.
Meanwhile, the Bull Demon King is still trying to destroy him. The Monk needs to go to the West. The gods need the Monkey King to fulfill his destiny.
But Joker has one last thing to do: he must use the time-traveling "Cinderella" to return to the past and save Zixia — even if it means giving up his immortality .
In the film's heartbreaking finale, Joker must choose: be the Monkey King and save the world, or be a man and save the woman he loves. He chooses to save the world. He puts on the golden headband. He becomes a hero.
But in doing so, he loses Zixia forever.
The Scene That Defines the Film
The film's most famous scene is the moment when Joker puts on the golden headband. He can't let himself love her — because if he does, he'll lose his powers. He says the words that have become legendary:
"I once let a love slip away before me. If I could do it all over again, I would say: 'I love you.'"
He holds her. He cries. But he can't say the words.
It's a moment of pure, devastating sacrifice.
