A Chinese Odyssey Part Three is the 2016 sequel to the beloved 1995 cult classic. Directed by Jeffrey Lau, who also directed the original, the film stars Han Geng as the new Monkey King, Wang Luodan as the new Lin Zixia, and Tiffany Tang as the new Spider Demon .
The film was a box office disappointment, earning just CNY 330 million (50 million . It holds a 4.5 on Douban, with over 50,000 ratings.
What Is It About?
The plot is a direct continuation of the original's time-travel storyline.
Joker (Han Geng) is the Monkey King. He's in love with Lin Zixia (Wang Luodan). But she's been cursed. He needs to break the curse — and the only way to do it is to travel back in time and prevent her death.
Meanwhile, the Bull Demon King is trying to destroy him. The Monk needs to go to the West. The gods need the Monkey King to fulfill his destiny.
It's the same plot as the original — but without the humor, the heart, or the chemistry.
Why It Failed
The film was doomed from the start. Stephen Chow wasn't in it. Karen Mok wasn't in it. The chemistry that made the original work was completely absent.
Jeffrey Lau, the director, tried to recapture the magic. But he failed. The humor felt forced. The romance felt hollow. The action felt cheap.
Fans were furious. They felt the film was a cash grab that disrespected the original.
Why It Still Matters
A Chinese Odyssey Part Three is a cautionary tale about what happens when you try to recapture lightning in a bottle.
It's also a reminder of how special the original films were — and how impossible it is to replicate them.
