Police Story 3: Supercop 警察故事 3 之超級警察 (1992): The One Where Jackie Chan Hung From a Helicopter, Michelle Yeoh Jumped a Motorcycle Onto a Train, and They Almost Died Doing It
One Sentence
A Hong Kong cop goes undercover in China, teams up with a no-nonsense female officer, and survives the most insane stunts ever filmed — including a helicopter rope ladder and a motorcycle jump onto a moving train.
What Is It About?
Inspector Chan Ka-kui (Jackie Chan) is sent to mainland China to infiltrate an international drug ring. His partner: Inspector Yang (Michelle Yeoh), a tough-as-nails Chinese officer who doesn't smile and doesn't mess around.
Their mission: break Panther (Yuen Wah), a henchman of drug lord Chaibat (Kenneth Tsang), out of prison. Earn his trust. Get to Hong Kong. Get to the boss. Get the evidence.
Simple, right?
Then Ka-kui's girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung) shows up in Malaysia, mistakes Yang for his mistress, and nearly blows the whole operation. The cover shatters. May is taken hostage. And what follows is one of the greatest action sequences ever filmed.
The Stunts That Defy Explanation
Michelle Yeoh's Motorcycle Jump — Yeoh rides a motorcycle off a ramp and onto a moving train. No CGI. No wires. Just a woman and a bike flying through the air. She hadn't even ridden a motorcycle before. She nailed it. The stunt double broke his leg trying to rehearse it.
Jackie Chan's Helicopter Ladder — Chan hangs from a rope ladder dangling from a helicopter as it swings over Kuala Lumpur. He's swaying hundreds of feet in the air. No harness. No safety net. Just a man holding on for dear life.
The Train Fight — The final battle takes place on top of a speeding train. A helicopter crashes into a tunnel. Chaos ensues. It's raw, dangerous, and completely real.
The Infamous Car Stunt
There's a scene where Yeoh has to jump from a van onto Chan's car. The windshield was supposed to break. It didn't.
Yeoh was falling headfirst. Chan reached out, grabbed her by the shirt, and pulled her to safety. She was inches from the asphalt.
Neither of them rehearsed it. They never rehearsed anything.
Michelle Yeoh Steals the Show
Chan was reportedly uncomfortable with his female co-star doing so many stunts. He told Yeoh he would be "protecting her." She told him to get out of her way.
She did every stunt herself. She was faster. More agile. And in the final product, she almost outshines Chan.
She also did her own motorcycle jump. The first take was perfect. The crew applauded.
Why It Matters
Police Story 3 is the best sequel in the franchise. It's bigger. Faster. More dangerous. And it introduced a new director, Stanley Tong, who pushed Chan harder than ever before.
Chan wasn't the director this time. He didn't like it. But it forced him to be a performer — and it resulted in some of his best work.
The film also marked the last appearance of Maggie Cheung in the series. She moved on to more serious roles. But her chaotic, comedic turn as May remains unforgettable.
Final Thought
Police Story 3 is Jackie Chan's most dangerous film. Michelle Yeoh's most impressive film. And the moment Hong Kong action cinema reached its peak.
No green screens. No stunt doubles. Just two people risking everything for a shot.
