Police Story 2 警察故事續集 (1988): The Sequel That Let Jackie Chan Get Hit By a Van, Jump Between Buses, and Prove He Wasn't Done Yet
One Sentence
A cop who can't stay retired chases bombers through Hong Kong, gets hit by a van on purpose, and fights a deaf-mute explosives expert in a fireworks factory.
What Is It About?
After the events of the first film, Inspector Chan Ka-kui (Jackie Chan) is demoted to highway patrol. His girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung) is thrilled — he finally has more time for her.
Then Chu Tao, the drug lord he put away, is released due to terminal illness. He vows revenge. His men beat up May. Ka-kui fights back, resigns, and plans a trip to Bali.
But a bomb threat at a shopping mall drags him back in. He's reinstated. The bombers demand $20 million and kidnap May. Ka-kui is strapped with an explosive vest and forced to deliver the ransom. He escapes, rescues May from a fireworks warehouse, and blows the whole place up.
The Stunts
Getting Hit by a Van — In one scene, Chan leaps across a highway and gets hit by a van doing 30 miles per hour. He bounces off, glances at it, and keeps going. One shot.
Bus Jumping — Chan jumps from one moving double-decker bus to another, dodges neon signs, and dives headfirst through a glass storefront.
Fireworks Factory Finale — The final fight takes place in a warehouse full of fireworks. Chan fights the deaf-mute villain while lit firecrackers explode around them.
More Action, Less Plot
The film runs 101 minutes — 30 minutes longer than the first. The added runtime slows things down. The middle act drags with stakeouts and police procedure.
But the action is relentless. Faster fights. More intricate choreography. The introduction of professional pyrotechnics.
Why It Matters
Police Story 2 won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Action Choreography. It grossed HK$34 million.
It's not as groundbreaking as the first. No single stunt matches the mall finale. But it's more refined. More brutal. And it proved Jackie Chan wasn't a one-hit wonder.
Final Thought
Police Story 2 is the sequel that does everything a sequel should: bigger action, higher stakes, and a hero who refuses to stay down.
It's not better than the first. But it's still Jackie Chan at his peak.
