Lawyer Lawyer 算死草 (1997): The Movie Stephen Chow Made in 18 Days Just to Repay a Favor — and Somehow It Still Made $27 Million

18 Days. One Favor. $27 Million.
Here's a fun fact about Lawyer Lawyer ( 算死草): Stephen Chow filmed it in 18 days. He wasn't even on set for a full week.
Why? He was repaying a favor to the producer. No passion project. No artistic vision. Just a favor.
And yet, it still became the 5th highest-grossing Hong Kong film of 1997 — HK$27 million at the box office.
That's the power of a name.
The Plot: A Lawyer, A Pupil, and A Very Messy Court
Chen Mengji (Stephen Chow) is a "流氓狀師" — a smooth-talking lawyer who loves playing tricks on people. His naive pupil, He Huan (Eric Kot), leaves for Hong Kong after a falling out. Months later, He Huan is framed for murder by his scheming brother.
Chen Mengji must travel to Hong Kong and defend him in a British colonial court.
The Good: One of the Best Lines in Stephen Chow's Career
There's a scene where Chen Mengji mocks the British judge under his breath:
"He keeps talking about the British Empire. This guy seems to have forgotten that Hong Kong was only lent to them — it has to be returned, buddy!"
In 1997 — the year of Hong Kong's handover — that line hit differently. And it still does.
The Bad: So Much Toilet Humor
Let's be honest. This film has a lot of lowbrow jokes. Feces. Farts. A scene involving a chicken leg in uncomfortable places. Even the most loyal fans admit it's a rough watch.
One Douban user wrote: "This is the only Stephen Chow film where I felt genuinely uncomfortable."
The One Scene Worth Rewatching
At the end, Chen Mengji's wife (Karen Mok) asks him: "How do you say 'I'm lonely' in English?"
He doesn't know.
She tells him: "I love you."
He says: "I love you."
It's a simple, quiet moment — and it's the most emotionally honest scene in the entire film.
Final Verdict
Lawyer Lawyer is not a good Stephen Chow film. It's not even a good film. It's a rushed, messy, lowbrow comedy made to repay a debt.
But it's also a fascinating time capsule: the year Hong Kong returned to China, the year Stephen Chow was at his commercial peak, and the year he learned a valuable lesson — next time, he'd direct his own films.
